The Spawn Chunks 410: A Cushy Chat With fWhip

Jul 13, 2026 | podcast

Joel, and Jonny welcome fWhip back to the podcast to talk about the latest developments in Minecraft. The conversation covers making sulfur work in your builds, niche uses for sulfur cubes, mobile biome envy, imaginative uses for the new cushion, and why Hardcore players should keep access to some game commands.

    • Working on Chaos Cubed themed builds like designing a Yellowstone inspired valley with geysers surrounded by a pine forest.
    • Also currently building a marshland by converting a swamp biome from grass blocks into mud after removing all the trees.
      • There will be a village in the middle of it with some Star Wars-y inspired bowl shaped houses on stilts sitting above the marsh.

    • Finished up the last of the command center core dig for now. It’s down to Y -30.
    • Started adding some lighting detail around the exterior of the command center, like sorting out how to light the foundation.
      • Uplighting always looks more futuristic but it’s difficult to design to look cool, and not just a glass hole in the ground.
    • Trying to figure out a design for the “roads” that also avoids the need to dig down another 2 blocks everywhere. However, they need depth.

      • Decided on oxidised copper grates for the goal netting, added more spectator stands, and flattened the rest of the terrain around it so the build can be expanded!

    • Got invited to join a few other creators as guests on Hermitcraft to play Zedaph’s new card game ‘Is That Sheep Looking At Me?’
      • The game is being Kickstarted as a physical product, but Zedaph has imported the art to the Hermitcraft server where it can be played using item frames, and a little bit of redstone for the draw, and discard piles.

SUBJECT: Expanding Biome Tint

Hi Joel and Pix,

In the latest dappled forest snapshots, I noticed how beautiful the grass color is. I immediately started thinking about how fun it would be to use those colors in other biomes, but since they’re tied to the biome itself that’s not really possible.

One idea I had is that certain trees could override the grass tint in a small radius around them. For example, if you planted a poplar tree in a plains biome, the grass surrounding that tree would take on the dappled forest’s orange tint. This would let players naturally “paint” landscapes with different tints without changing the entire biome.

It could also open up some creative building possibilities. For example, players could plant trees underground or hide them beneath terrain to subtly vary the grass color above, making some areas look drier, lusher, or simply adding patches of natural variation. Landscapes could feel much more organic without relying on resource packs.

I’m curious what you think about the idea.

Thanks for all the great episodes!

Pull Up A Cushion And Catch Up With fWhip

Joel, and Jonny catch up with fWhip on all things Minecraft! Chaos Cubed is out now, and fWhip has spent time exploring the sulfur and cinnabar blocks, as well as the geyser features, and incorporating them into builds. The dappled forest is on the horizon, and everyone is excited to implement something from the current features coming in the new drop. Cushions are a fluffy topic to sit deep into, but poplar wood and leaves, and shelf mushrooms are also big additions for long term landscapers like fWhip.
