SUBJECT: Librarians And The Case Of The Lost Name Tags
Hey Jonny, and Joel,
During Episode 392, the topic of the removed name tag trade, and what to replace it with came up, and it occurred to me that maybe there could be some synergy with the Villager Trade Rebalance experiments from (Can you believe it?) nearly three years ago.
Whilst the proposed changes at that time were contentious, what if Mojang were to take a leaf out of that book, (Proof-reading Banchor here – pun not intended!) and substitute the Master tier name tag trade with a guaranteed book trade from a select pool of highly desired books?
The “guaranteed” book could still be Villager biome dependant, ie. Swamp Villager for Mending, Desert for Efficiency; but the earlier tier book trades would continue to be random as they currently are. This way, you still have more or less the same chance to get Mending, et al. from any villager, but if you want to put in the exploration effort to avoid the Lectern grind, you can have more control.
Maybe Efficiency III, and Sharpness III would need to be increased to IV (or V?) on the guaranteed trade as well, so that these don’t require multiple upgrades to hit the max level.
Thanks for the great podcast as always!

Daring To Dream
Looking ahead to the first Minecraft Live of 2026 coming up on March 21st, Jonny, and Joel lay out some ideas on what they think may be announced, what they hope will be announced, and some bigger, “pie in the sky” dreams about Minecraft’s future.
