SUBJECT: Tree Chopping Woes

Hi Pix and Joel,

I wanted to get your thoughts on having a “timber” type enchantment in Minecraft. This enchantment would essentially replicate what a lot of mods, and datapacks have done in recent years, allowing players to chop an entire tree by only breaking one log.

I think this would help a lot of players looking to gather various wood types from the more finicky trees, (Looking at you, mangrove!) while still being a balanced feature since you would have to get it from an enchanting table. To make it a fair trade-off, the breaking of said log on a tree could be slower depending on the size of the tree you’re trying to chop down. For example, a small oak tree would fall much faster than a 2×2 spruce tree, and the durability on your axe could be used up in proportion to how many logs you would have to break if you gathered the wood normally. It may even be worth considering only being able to find this enchantment in structures, like jungle temples or trial chambers, to make the experience of finding it more of an adventure.

Excited to hear your thoughts on this!

SUBJECT: Renewable Sand Idea

Hello!

Just wanted to say I love the podcast, and have been enjoying it in the car on my way to work.

I think a really interesting idea to solve the renewable sand problem would be to utilize dripstone setups. A block of sand could be placed on the block above the one holding the dripstone, just like other dripstone setups, and sand particles could rain down into a cauldron, which can then be moved with buckets. To craft a sand block a 2×2, or 3×3 bucket of sand can make X amount of sand blocks.

I think this idea has a lot of potential because the sand block source can have durability like armor etc, you can change the timing for the drip, and it has a similar mechanic to previous features.  There’s a lot of flexibility to make sure this setup doesn’t get too tedious or overpowered.

I’d love to know what you guys think!

Lily fell to their death trying to collect suspended sand in a desert.

Block Availability & Renewable Resources

The Chunk Mail Box has received several emails on renewable resources, and alternative resource collection ideas over the last few weeks. Jonny, and Joel take the opportunity to look at the broader topic of block, and resource availability in Minecraft, and the balance between blocks being difficult, time intensive, or not enjoyable to obtain, up against the ability of players to collect some resources from a player made farm, or utilize game mechanics to gather them more efficiently.
