Hey Jonny, and Joel,

When you wondered what Minecraft levels, and experience could become, my brain – fresh from listening to all of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere novels – made a connection to a different magic system, and its core mechanic, “investiture”.

Simply put, the more levels you have, the more buffs, bonuses, or abilities you’d receive. Want to be able to accurately see which enchantments are available in the enchanting table? Better keep your levels high enough for that special sight bonus to be in effect.

The effects could be a set the same for everyone, or could also be affected by the type of armor worn, tools equipped, or time spent in specific biomes. The possibilities are fun to imagine, if difficult to imagine balancing! There could even be specific tools that use up chunks of your experience bar to function, consuming it as fuel.

Anything fun super powers spring to mind that you’d enjoy using in Minecraft?

SUBJECT: Astronomy In Minecraft

Greetings, Jonny and Joel,

The night sky in Minecraft has never been very interesting, I think adding astronomy to Minecraft would be a great new feature!

The sun, moon, and stars could be given realistic movements across the sky. There could be planets, galaxies, nebulas, constellations, and astronomical phenomena such as eclipses, comets, shooting stars, and aurora borealis. We already have the spyglass which could be used to get a better view, and maybe we could build telescopes to get more detail.

Whether the sky in Minecraft is based on our own or generated via the world seed this system would provide great educational value similar to archeology.

Of course Minecraft players will want to get some gameplay value from every new feature. Given how the night sky has historically been linked to various mythologies I think it could have some interaction with Minecrafts magic system. Perhaps certain phenomena can guarantee enchantments like if you enchant your pickaxe during a solar eclipse you’re guaranteed to get fortune 3 on it.

Another idea is to have meteors land that you can mine for precious resources, although I don’t know how you would avoid having your house explode.

What do you think? Tired of seeing the same sky every night? Does astronomy have a place in Minecraft?
