  • The Minecraft Survival Guide, Season 3
    • This week is “Structures Week” on The Minecraft Survival Guide.
      • Desert temples, and shipwrecks were touched on last week.
      • Structures being covered this week are abandoned mineshafts, the Nether Fortress, and an igloo.
        • The igloo actually has a zombie spawner generate so close to it that it removed the back corner of the stone basement! Definitely some plans for future use.
      • Finding the igloo prompted a look at villagers, with plans for curing zombie villagers, and eventually going to a naturally generated village.

SUBJECT: Returning To Minecraft After A Decade

Hi Joel, and Pix,

In last week’s episode (251) you asked for the experiences of people returning to Minecraft. I started playing Minecraft just after infdev turned into alpha. I won’t bother you with my personal history, but life happened, and I quit playing all video games in 2011.

I started playing Minecraft again during the early pandemic, nearly a decade later. My first experience with new Minecraft was not being able to craft a bed because one of my three wool wasn’t white. I did not make shields for six months simply because I constantly forgot they existed.

Now, I’ve beaten the enderdragon multiple times, I have maxed out enchantments on my full netherite gear, and a trading hall with forty villagers, and it only took three years to catch up!

From my perspective, horses, nether fortresses and dark oak forests are equally as new as netherite, illager raids, and bees, and I couldn’t tell you whether foxes are newer than acacia trees or not.

One of my least favourite “new” additions are the drowned. On the other hand, the recipe book is a brilliant addition now that the game has a truly ridiculous amount of crafting recipes.

I’m curious to hear from people who’ve started playing Minecraft recently, because I feel like Minecraft now has a learning curve as steep and long as software like Blender.

ImpImperfect walked into a pit of lava, because he was too distracted wondering how the tradition of death message signoffs began.

SUBJECT: Wondering Armor Trim Traders

Hey Pix, and Joel!

Hope you are doing well. In Episode 249, you talked about the possibility of villagers having an armour trim as a trade option, but that it could be exploited very easily.

This got me thinking about trading for armour trims in general, and I think the most balanced way to do it would be with wandering traders. They could have a very low chance of having an armour trim, which could be locked at a single trade so that the player only gets one armor trim. They could either have all of the existing armour trims or they could have a unique armor trim, only available through trading with them.

In Minecraft 1.17, we were hyped to see these traders for small dripleaf, whereas normally they’re not that useful in most cases. So adding an item which can only be obtained through trading with them could make players happy to see them again.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you for reading!

EvilShadoww found 2 extra leads in his inventory because the trader had no trims.

Thank you to our Patrons!

The Village Life Balance

With the adventure on The Minecraft Survival Guide crossing paths with villagers, Jonny has been looking at villages, villager professions, and villager trades, and questioning the role villagers play in Minecraft Trails & Tales. Does the use of diamond in duplicating smithing templates help balance out villager trades for diamond tools? Should Mojang consider adding new features to villager trades with Minecraft 1.20 content? Should some new biomes like mangrove swamps, and cherry groves, have new villager types?
